Shigellosis is a gastrointestinal infection caused mostly by bacterium Shigella sonnei. This is mostly transmitted through oral-fecal route. The transmission is usually through contaminated food or water. The leaking in the sewage system can cause the natural water bodies to be contaminated with this bacterium. The outbreak of such an infection can be caused by cross-contamination of the water supply and sewage water.
