The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) carried out traceback investigations to find out the source of the raspberries that were consumed by the affected individuals in New Jersey. The importers and distributors were identified via the shipping details, invoices, importation documents, invoices and the airway bill numbers which were used for the shipping and importation of the raspberries.

29 out of 54 events that served raspberries definitely imported the raspberries from Guatemala and this was found out by the document verifications of import and export by the FDA. The Guatemala raspberries were found out to be 4-20% of the fresh raspberries that were imported to the United States from April to June.
