Step 1 of 3
Broad Street has been a very important place in the history of cholera. The most devastating outbreak took place in the year 1854 in Broad Street London. On the night of 31st August, 56 people were attacked by cholera. On the following day, 143 were attacked out of which 70 died.
The deceased were reported to have consumed water from the frequently used pump at Broad Street. This pump was later removed resulting in decline of attacks as well as deaths in the region. Water obtained from pump was found to be inoculated by organic matter, though its source was not known. Sewer pipes were observed to be intact, hence ruling out the chance of contamination from sever line.
