Step 1 of 2

Generally a fluid can be categorized by the cause of an effusion as either “transudate” or “exudate”.

The main causes of effusions include increased hydrostatic pressure, decreased oncotic pressure, increased capillary permeability, and lymphatic obstruction.

Transudate:

The effusions are formed because of a systematic disorder which interrupts the fluid filtration balance and re-absorption like variation in hydrostatic pressure by congestive heart failure or hypoproteinemia related with nephrotic syndrome. These are called as “transudate”.

Exudate:

The exudates are formed by the conditions which are directly involved with membranes of the particular cavity, as well as infections and malignancies.

• It contains high cell count and protein content.
