Macrophages remove cellular debris such as RBCs (Red Blood Cells) from CSF (cerebrospinal fluid).

• They are seen after 2-4 hours of RBC entry to CSF and they engulf the RBC

• Degradation of engulfed RBCs causes appearance of dark blue or black iron that contains hemosiderin granule

• Hematoidin crystals appear when further degeneration occurs
