Discuss the significance of oval fat bodies.

Oval fat bodies:

Oval fat bodies are renal tubular epithelial cells (RTE) with lipids.

• Renal Tubular Epithelial (RTE) cells absorbs lipids from glomerular filtrate of kidney, appears refractile that is referred as oval fat bodies

• Oval fat bodies seen in combination with fat droplets which are free floating

• The urine sediment is stained with Sudan III or Oil Red O stains to detect presence of oval fat bodies

• Examination of oval fat body is done with polarized microscopy

• Oval fat bodies are reported in average number per high power field
