Edition 6ISBN: 0803641044 Exercise 82
Reagent strip–specific gravity readings are affected by:
A. Glucose
B. Radiographic dye
C. Alkaline urine
D. All of the above
Step-by-step solution
Step 1 of 3
Specific gravity reaction interference:
The reading of specific gravity is affected by alkaline urine (pH above 6.5) which gives false-negative results.
• The specific gravity readings should be increased (1.000-1.030) in reagent strip; it is increased with the help of acidic urine (below 6.0).
• Alkaline pH above 6.5 will decrease the specific gravity readings.
• This interference is caused by bromthymol blue indicator used in reagent strip reaction for specific gravity.
