Describe the relationship of urinary ammonia and titratable acidity to the production of an acidic urine.

Relationship of titratable acidity and urinary ammonia, and to the production of acidic urine:

Urinary ammonia:

• Ammonia formed by break down of amino acid glutamine in proximal convoluted tubule of nephron

• Hydrogen ion, and ammonia forms ammonium ions that are cleared in urine

• Acidic urine:

o Urine with pH below 5.0 ranges is termed as acidic urine

• Ammonium ion when excreted in low quantity leads to tubular acidosis of kidney
