Deck 30: Cladding Systems
1
What are some considerations when choosing joint sealant for a curtain wall?
The choice of joint sealant depends on the materials to be sealed, the function of the joint, and possible changes that may occur in the joints after the sealant has been installed.
2
Define and describe EIFS systems.
Modified stucco curtain wall panels are an assembly of materials providing both insulation and a weather tight rain-screen. The system is referred to as an exterior insulation and finish system (EIFS). An EIFS is typically attached to the outside face of exterior walls with adhesive or mechanical fasteners. Most systems begin with a sheathing material over which expanded Polystyrene (EPS) insulation board is secured with special mechanical fasteners. The substrate often uses a board with inorganic glass mat facings, a water-resistant, silicone-treated gypsum core, and an alkali-resistant surface coating. A base coat is troweled over the insulation board; then a reinforcing mesh is embedded into it. A final synthetic plaster finish coat is troweled over the base coat. Some EIFS systems include only the insulation and EIFS coatings. Other types also include plastic edge trim, water-resistive barriers, a drainage cavity, and other accessories.
