Uniparental disomy results when a child inherits two copies of a chromosome, or part of a chromosome, from one parent and none from the other. This can occur through different mechanisms, but commonly by nondisjunction during meiosis followed by duplication of one of the homologous chromosomes. As a result, the child is homozygous for all the genes on that chromosome, which can lead to genetic disorders if the affected genes are imprinted or if there are deleterious recessive alleles.
