This formulation of the categorical imperative requires us to do two things. First, it forbids us from treating others as a mere means. In other words, people cannot be used in the same way inanimate objects might be used (as tools). In all of our actions, we must give consideration to the goals of others. We cannot, for instance, force people to mow our lawns. We could, however, pay a person to mow our lawn, since that would respect the person's rights. We must also treat humanity as an end in itself. This aspect of the categorical imperative commands us to occasionally take an active role in promoting the (legitimate) goals of others, e.g., giving to charity, helping those in need.
