Entrapment and compression of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel causes pain and numbness in the wrist, hands, and fingers.
Tendons, blood vessels, and the median nerve pass through a narrow fibrous tunnel that extends from the wrist to the hand (see Figure 15-26). Carpal tunnel syndrome results when the tendons within the tunnel become inflamed from repetitive overuse of the hand, wrist, or fingers, thereby causing entrapment of the median nerve as it passes through the wrist, which results in the pinching of the median nerve (see Figure 15-27). Any condition that exerts pressure on the median nerve can cause carpal tunnel syndrome.
